Charging infrastructure for e-cars is well received: More charging points are being set up

Offenbach am Main is consistently expanding its public charging network for electric vehicles and the demand from citizens confirms that it is on the right track: 58 public charging points have already been installed on Offenbach streets since 2024. The number is set to rise to around 100 charging points by the end of 2026 in order to create an even more comprehensive basic offering in the city. This does not include private or semi-private charging points, for example at employers or retail locations. "Creating a sufficient number of charging points is particularly important in a densely populated city like Offenbach. Many people live in apartment buildings, often without their own parking spaces, and are therefore unable to set up their own charging infrastructure. Allowing publicly accessible charging facilities is our part as a city. We provide spaces on the roadside for this purpose," says Mayor Sabine Groß.
Positive balance after one year
After around a year, the operators Qwello, EVO and Eze.Network have drawn a consistently positive balance: "The charging stations have been very well received," they report. Locations in inner-city areas are particularly popular. Most charging processes are recorded at the stations on the corner of Friedrichstraße and Bleichstraße, on Berliner Straße and on Andréstraße. The utilization figures are rising steadily, so that around 10,000 charging processes are expected at the charging stations by the end of this year. Mayor Sabine Groß: "The increasing demand clearly shows that our charging network is in high demand among the people of Offenbach. That's why we will be stepping up the expansion once again in the coming year so that a charging point is always available at popular locations. And of course we are thinking beyond 2026 - e-mobility is the future on our roads and we are well positioned with our demand-oriented model."
Demand-oriented model for needs-based expansion
What makes Offenbach special is the demand-oriented model: if an operator reports high capacity utilization in an area, it is obliged to submit an application for additional charging points in order to retain its management rights for this area ("polygon"). The city's e-charging infrastructure working group reviews these applications together with the operator within a few weeks and decides quickly on approval.
This procedure makes it possible to create charging points exactly where they are actually needed and at the same time ensure stable framework conditions for the mobility transition. In this way, Offenbach is gradually becoming a city with a sustainable, needs-based and economically viable charging infrastructure for electric cars.
"A needs-based expansion is important to me. As we provide space for this in public areas, we have to use this space responsibly. For this reason, the demand-oriented model we have opted for is a very good solution," concludes the mayor.
