Marking work begins for new hard shoulder on Frankfurter Straße
11.09.2024
From tomorrow, the city of Offenbach will be taking an important step towards improving road safety for cyclists. On September 12, 2024, weather permitting, the installation of the new protective lanes for cyclists on Frankfurter Straße between Ludwigstraße and August-Bebel-Ring will begin. The marking and signage work is expected to take one day. Stopping restrictions have been put in place for the work. To compensate for the loss of parking spaces on the carriageway of Frankfurter Straße, the city will offer employees and customers the opportunity to park in the side streets for up to ten hours for a fee. Residents with a resident parking permit can continue to use these parking spaces without paying an additional fee and without a time limit. Further information can be found at www.offenbach.de/bikeoffenbach. This project will close a gap on an important main route between Offenbach and Frankfurt for many residents, schoolchildren, local residents and commuters.
Background information:
Frankfurter Straße is characterized by old, disused streetcar rails and tracks, which currently represent a considerable source of danger for cyclists, especially in wet weather conditions. Removing the streetcar tracks would require an expensive and complex complete renovation of Frankfurter Straße, which is not realistic in the near future. In order to minimize the danger, however, new protective strips are being installed instead, which run outside the tracks. The road surface offers space for this, but only if the longitudinal parking for motor vehicles that was previously permitted in sections is allowed, which is why the parking spaces will be removed.
This measure is part of the agreement "For a bicycle-friendly city of Offenbach am Main" adopted by the city councillors on 15.09.2022, which aims to promote mobility by bicycle and make cycling in Offenbach easier and safer.
