Road marking work underway on Waldstrasse
20.03.2024 – The new markings for the trial run will be installed this week and next week. They have become necessary as the existing yellow markings have faded and are difficult to see, especially in rainy weather.
From next week, the optimizations recommended by the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, i.e. red markings and large pictograms, will also be added: "We see the potential here to make the cycle lanes more visible, especially in 'tricky' places," says Ivonne Gerdts, Head of the Office for Mobility. The re-markings were commissioned back in November, but could not be implemented due to the cold and very wet weather in recent months. Dry weather with temperatures consistently above ten degrees is necessary for this.
Background information
The infrastructure for cycling in Offenbach still needs to be improved in many areas of the city to make it safer and easier to get around. In September 2022, the city councillors passed the resolution "For a bicycle-friendly city of Offenbach am Main", instructing the city council to improve the infrastructure for cyclists. As the first major measure from this resolution, the city decided on a trial operation on Waldstraße last year: For an initial period of one year, two of the four lanes previously reserved primarily for car traffic were converted into cycle lanes. No parking spaces had to be removed. Since July 2023, motorized traffic and cyclists have had their own lane area in each direction. The one-year trial operation between Bleichstraße and Friedrichsring or Hessenring was approved by the city councillors in February 2023 as an immediate measure.
