City of Offenbach

One-way streets in Bieber open to cycle traffic

05.07.2024

Mayor and Head of Mobility Sabine Groß was on site during the marking work.

The Office for Mobility will gradually open 24 one-way streets in the Bieber district to bicycle traffic from next week.

By opening the road in both directions, we are taking the next important step towards making cycling in Offenbach more practical and attractive for our citizens.

To ensure traffic safety, the city is installing new signs and is currently applying road markings. Ground pictograms in front of bends and areas marked in red at the entrances and exits of main roads increase road users' awareness and improve the visibility of cyclists. Signs and road markings ensure that the new traffic rules are clear and understandable and that road users are well informed. The implementation is being financially supported by the state of Hesse's Local Mobility Working Group (AGNH) with the "Hesse Transport Infrastructure Funding" funding program.

The aim of opening up the one-way streets is to reduce unnecessary detours for cyclists, enable connections to the network of cycle routes in both directions and thus significantly improve the speed of cycle traffic. The measure promotes the city of short distances, strengthens non-motorized traffic and thus contributes to the reduction of traffic-related CO2 emissions.

The city of Offenbach appeals to all road users to observe the applicable traffic regulations and to show consideration, especially in the affected streets. The same applies to both cyclists and cars: Ride on the right, do not cut left turns, allow oncoming traffic to pass before turning and observe the right-of-way rules. In one-way streets, 'right before left' applies - unless there are other signs.

With this measure, the city of Offenbach is sending a further signal for sustainable and future-oriented mobility. "Everyone who takes the opportunity to switch to a bicycle is not only doing something good for themselves and their health, but is also improving the quality of life for others through less noise and better air," says Groß.
