Conversion of traffic lights is progressing
08.03.2022 – Offenbach's traffic lights are being converted: The traffic light controls on three of the six busiest routes in Offenbach were modernized in the first two months of 2022. At the beginning of March, conversion work began on a further two traffic lights in the city.
The conversion work is part of the measures in the city of Offenbach's local clean air plan. The new traffic-dependent digital traffic light control system will enable traffic lights to react to the respective traffic volume in future. This should relieve the road network and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
As part of the conversion of the systems in the eastern part of the southern ring road (between Unterer Grenzstraße / Lämmerspieler Weg and Spessartring / DRK), the traffic lights at the Bieberer Straße / Untere Grenzstraße junction and subsequently the Rhönstraße / Buchhügelallee system are currently being modernized. These are complex junctions where, in addition to upgrading the detection system and working on the control unit, further work is required in the junction area. This includes, for example, laying cables and replacing traffic light poles.
Work began at the Bieberer Straße / Untere Grenzstraße junction with the installation of the temporary traffic lights that will control traffic during the conversion. In mid-April, work then began at the Rhönstraße / Buchhügelallee junction to set up the temporary system. Depending on the construction phase, individual lanes will not be usable during the work. Traffic obstructions are to be expected during the entire period, for which the city of Offenbach asks for your understanding. The work is expected to be completed in June 2022.
The "traffic liquefaction" measure is part of the extensive catalog of measures to reduce nitrogen oxides and was funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport through the "Clean Air" immediate action program. Among other things, the immediate action programme focused on supporting measures to digitalize municipal transport systems.
