Together with DHL, the city of Offenbach yesterday (June 23) presented the use of two electrically assisted Rytle MovR cargo bikes. The new vehicles will be used for parcel delivery in the pedestrian zone and adjacent streets in particular - quiet, particularly maneuverable and emission-free.

The new vehicles were presented on site in the presence of Sabine Groß, Head of the Mobility Department. The measure is part of the municipal strategy to strengthen environmentally friendly city logistics and the 2035 transport development plan, which aims to achieve future-oriented, climate-friendly mobility for Offenbach.

"Parcel delivery services are continuing to increase. I am therefore delighted that Offenbach is the first city in Hesse to use DHL's Rytle MovR. The use of cargo bikes can not only make delivery traffic more efficient, but also relieve our roads and contribute to better air quality and less noise in our city," says Sabine Groß, Head of Mobility.

DHL is starting operations in Offenbach with two Rytle MovR vehicles. The cargo bikes will be used in the city center. Around 800 parcels per week - over 40,000 per year - are to be delivered with low CO₂ emissions. For DHL, the launch in Offenbach is part of a larger strategy: "E-mobility has long been a high priority for us and we are a clear pioneer in logistics here. We now have over 32,000 electric delivery vehicles in use in Germany and are planning to electrify our entire fleet. The 'Hessenstart' here in Offenbach is a further step in this direction. We will start with two Rytle MovR vehicles and carefully monitor and analyze the use of the new vehicles," says Stefan Heß, DHL Group press spokesman.

"We are focusing on working in partnership with companies such as DHL to promote sustainable solutions - for example in the search for suitable locations for packing stations."

At the Offenbach delivery base in Benzstrasse, 46 of 57 vehicles are already electric - the entire delivery fleet is set to be locally emission-free by summer 2025. This is already reducing CO₂ emissions in the city every day.

Another measure from the transport development plan is closely linked to the project: In order to optimize delivery processes, the city is supporting the expansion of the network of parcel machines as far as legally possible and arranging potential partners for parking spaces. These enable citizens to collect their parcels conveniently and flexibly - around the clock and without additional traffic caused by repeated delivery attempts. Now also with a provider-open concept, so that the machines can be used by different parcel service providers. The first "DeinFach" machine was recently opened at Buchrainweg 59.

"I see the development of sustainable logistics concepts as a decisive lever for reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality and thus also as a contribution to creating a city worth living in. This project clearly demonstrates how smart partnerships can lead to concrete improvements - for the climate, air quality and a better quality of life in the heart of our Offenbach. My thanks go to my colleagues at DHL, without whom this project would not have been possible," concludes Mayor Sabine Groß.

Background

With the mail center in Sprendlinger Landstraße and the delivery base in Benzstraße, DHL not only has a strong logistical presence in Offenbach, but is also a major employer: around 350 employees work in the two facilities. Every day, 4,000 parcels and over 7 million letters a year are delivered in Offenbach by the Post's mail carriers - many of them on foot or by bicycle in the 41 delivery districts.
