Trial operation on Waldstraße is completed

09.09.2024 – In March 2023, the city council decided to install cycle lanes on Waldstraße. The aim of a one-year trial was to test how the road space could be divided up to give cyclists more space and safety alongside car and bus traffic. The trial was accompanied by the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, which recently presented its final report.

Mayor and Head of Mobility Sabine Groß has announced that the trial operation is now coming to an end. "The trial operation has shown that a traffic division on Waldstraße, which provides for a shared lane for cyclists and buses, works without causing congestion in the remaining lane for car traffic. After a period of familiarization and with clear markings, motorists have predominantly used the lane intended for motor vehicles. This was also assessed as such by the majority of city councillors at the meeting," explains Groß. It also became clear, as the final report shows, that bus traffic was accelerated and that a separate bus lane, which could also be used by cyclists, would continue to function as an environmental lane.

The majority at the city council meeting supported the removal. The administration is therefore tasked with the removal.

An important practical note for road users: As long as the signage and markings on Waldstrasse are still in place, the previous regulations will continue to apply unchanged.
