Offenbach peppernuts rediscovered

Once world-famous, then forgotten: Offenbach's fine pepper nuts were already considered a delicacy in the 18th and 19th centuries and were served as a "Hessian specialty" at state receptions until the 1980s. Now journalist Susanne Reininger and delicatessen specialist Annette Laier have rediscovered the culinary treasure of their home town and, after months of development work, have refined the original recipe for the 21st century.

Offenbach peppernuts

The recipe and preparation were the best-kept secrets in town and Susanne Reininger and Annette Laier also guard their list of ingredients, which they developed further together with the kitchen team from the Hainbachtal workshops in Offenbach's Stadtcafé. There, the Pfeffernüsse are made by hand with great skill and the finest original ingredients. Offenbach designer Peter Reichard created a "treasure chest" based on the historical packaging from the turn of the century.

Offenbacher Pfeffernüsse are available from the A. Laier coffee roastery on Wilhelmsplatz (Bieberer Straße 12). Other points of sale are Café Frieda (at Lilipark), wine and whiskey shop "Genussverstärker" (at Goetheplatz), wine shop "Tour de Vins" (Domstraße 53), Vino Monte (Seligenstädter Straße 7) in Bieber.
