The Mainuferpark is a local recreation area directly on the river and a resting place for cyclists, thousands of whom pass by here on nice days. The first public beach volleyball facility in Offenbach was also inaugurated in the Mainuferpark in 2010.
The various sections of the Main riverbank in Offenbach perform a wide variety of functions. As part of the regional park route and the green ring, the banks of the Main are of regional significance, and as a popular recreational area, they are of important local significance for the people of Offenbach.
Nestled between the city and nature, between industrial wasteland and the historic Main Gardens, the Main foreshore has the task of meeting a wide range of usage requirements. In a series of individual projects (track removal, Maingärten), the heterogeneous Offenbach Main riverbank has been upgraded in recent years.
While the western section from Carl-Ullrich-Brücke to Kulturgleis has a focus on quiet relaxation and culture, the eastern section, where the Main foreshore widens out, offers plenty of space for more active forms of play and recreation.
With the design of the Mainuferpark, a further component of the "HEGISS - Hessische Gemeinschaftsinitiative Soziale Stadt" program has been implemented in the area of the eastern inner city.
Contents of the Mainuferpark: The Mainuferpark begins in the west directly adjacent to the Kulturgleis and attracts attention with its geometric rows of trembling columnar poplars. The columnar trees emphasize the entrance situation and support the traffic guidance at this point: the asphalt path close to the embankment enables obstacle-free travel for inline skaters and cyclists. The promenade path close to the embankment, made of chipped asphalt and water-bound surfacing, invites people to take a stroll and linger.
Incorporated into the promenade path along the banks of the Main are 3 squares with large seating steps that allow people to sit directly on the banks. The anthracite-colored concrete seating steps are partly covered with wooden surfaces and invite you to sunbathe. The rear end of each of the three squares is formed by an approx. 15-metre-long seating wall, which is also covered with wooden cushions.
Between the promenade path and the asphalt path close to the dyke are the large lawns, which can be used for a variety of purposes: In addition to sunbathing, sports and play areas, there is a barbecue area where barbecuing is officially permitted. Users must bring their own barbecue equipment - and are expected to leave the areas tidy.
The focal point of the Mainuferpark is the 600-square-metre children's playground, which offers a variety of play options, especially for small and medium-sized children. A large wooden ship, "ship's cargo hatches" and "flotsam" pick up on the river theme and encourage imaginative role play.
Adjacent to the children's playground are the so-called "Offenbach cliffs": 4 large granite blocks have been set directly into the banks of the Main and now provide a raised seating area directly above the water level.
In the eastern section of the Mainuferpark, a beach volleyball court and a streetball court are aimed primarily at young people and sporty adults. The streetball court is already visible from afar thanks to its blue-coated asphalt surface and - in accordance with streetball rules - is equipped with just one basket. The eastern end of the Mainuferpark forms - analogous to the western starting point - a square area with rows of trembling poplar trees, which should also act as a landmark visible from afar.
