Traveling exhibition "Made in Hessen" - Global industrial stories

World-famous, ground-breaking and sometimes inconspicuous inventions: This is what the traveling exhibition "Made in Hessen. Global industrial stories".

We cordially invite you to the exhibition opening on September 18 at 6 pm!

The exhibition will be on display from September 18, 2024 to February 16, 2025.

The special exhibition shows industrial history through products, brands and ideas that found their way from Hessen into an increasingly globalized world. Small and big stories about spy cameras from Wetzlar, world-famous mineral water or international research networks provide new perspectives on the region from the beginning of industrialization around 1800 to the present day.

It tells the story of the development of Hessian inventions and companies against the backdrop of global change. And it is not just about success stories. Strong competition and price pressure meant that many a successful product from Hessen soon became insignificant again. Colonialist exploitation helped some companies to become rich. A lack of resources and isolationist policies following the world wars cut other companies off from the global market.

"Made in Hessen" is a joint project of four Hessian museums, the Museumsverband Hessen and the Hessian Economic Archive. The Institute for Social and Economic History at Philipps University Marburg, the Institute for Art History at Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Wetzlar Municipal Museums are supporting the project. The presentation will be on display at the Stadt- und Industriemuseum Rüsselsheim, the Hessisches Braunkohle Bergbaumuseum Borken and the Haus der Stadtgeschichte Offenbach.

Parallel to the exhibition, the website www.made-in-hessen.online.de extends the themes into the digital space. In addition to other objects, connections between individual products and companies are shown here that go beyond the exhibition.

A catalog of the exhibition will be published by wbg Darmstadt.
