City of Offenbach

Dr. Michael Eiblmaier is the new head of the Offenbach fire department

19.03.2024 – The Offenbach Fire Department has a new head: Dr. Michael Eiblmaier has been responsible for fire and civil protection in the city of Offenbach since mid-February. The city council appointed the 55-year-old fire director to head the department after he beat four other applicants in the selection process.

Eiblmaier has been rooted in the Offenbach fire department since 2001. He became deputy head of the department in 2005 and took over as acting head of the department in mid-2023 after the long-serving head of the fire department, Uwe Sauer, moved to the Ministry of Social Affairs in Wiesbaden. A decision on Eiblmaier's successor as deputy is also to be made soon.

Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke made it clear after the appointment: "With Dr. Michael Eiblmaier, the choice fell on a very experienced leader who has provided outstanding services to protect the people in our city for over 20 years and enjoys great trust within the fire department team. In the coming years, his most important tasks will include modernizing and expanding the fire department for the city, which has grown significantly in terms of area and population, as well as the development of new structures and tasks for civil protection and disaster control - in close and trusting cooperation with the volunteer fire departments in Offenbach. Added to this is the consideration of the different needs in fire protection and the constantly growing rescue service." Michael Eiblmaier says: "I am very pleased about the new responsibility and would like to work above all for an efficient Offenbach fire department. This includes a suitable new building, suitable locations and properties, a modern and needs-based vehicle fleet and adequate personnel resources."

Eiblmaier joined the Offenbach fire department in December 2001 as a probationary fire officer and took over the management of the Preventive Fire and Hazard Protection department. Since 2002, he has been in charge of overall operations management for major incidents and in 2003 also took over the management of the rescue service and operational planning departments. Since then, his responsibilities have included quality management, the strategic development of the department and personnel decisions. In 2004, he was appointed as a fire councillor for life, and one year later he took over as deputy head of the department and head of the department for fire prevention and protection. In this area, too, he was responsible for personnel matters, the organization and planning of operations, the coordination of the three volunteer fire departments and the youth fire department, basic and advanced training and disaster control. In addition, he ensured that the information technology of the radio control center worked and that the emergency number 112 was always available to the public. In 2006, he was appointed Fire Chief Councillor and in 2012 Fire Director.

Significant projects that Eiblmaier was jointly responsible for during his time with the fire department include fire protection in schools, the restructuring of the operational and departmental service, which led to a reduction in the burdensome additional work for firefighters, and the modernization of the radio control centre, the introduction of digital radio for the fire and rescue services, the introduction of a 24-hour service for the watch departments and later for the radio control center, as well as the development of the fire department's new room concept to ensure that it can continue to be deployed quickly in the growing urban area in the future.
