Varied day for the fire department
10.07.2024 – In the last 24 hours, the Offenbach fire department completed a total of 19 operations. Some of these were not everyday operations.
One of these was a fallen oak tree, which resulted in a full closure of Sprendlinger Landstraße at the start of rush hour. The 20m-long tree with a trunk diameter of 40cm not only obstructed the flow of traffic, but two car drivers were also lucky enough to be hit by the tree but only escaped with damage to the bodywork. Fortunately, no one was injured. At least one car was able to continue its journey independently.
The Offenbach Fire Department's newest vehicle was also able to put its skills to the test during this operation. The swap body vehicle with crane, which was still undergoing training at the time, was able to test its operational capabilities under real conditions with the colleagues responsible for training. In addition, the power supply line of the street lighting was torn down over a length of approx. 100m.
The operation was completed after around four hours.
In the early evening, the emergency services then moved out to a reported room fire in the Rumpenheim district of Offenbach. Thanks to a stroke of luck, there was no major damage. For unknown reasons, a toy battery exploded in an apartment, which initially produced a lot of smoke. Thanks to the quick action of the tenant, who threw the battery into a water bath and immediately opened the windows for ventilation, the fire department's measures were limited to a final check.
There were no injuries here either.
As forecast by the German Weather Service, there were severe storms in parts of Hesse later in the evening. Despite heavy rainfall and some strong gusts, only four storm-related operations were recorded within the Offenbach city area by this morning.
All three of the city's volunteer fire departments supported the forces of the professional fire department. As they had their training evening on Wednesdays, a large number of volunteers were available right from the start.
The situation was different in our neighboring cities and districts, so we responded to a request for assistance from the city of Hanau at around 9 p.m. and the Offenbach control center dispatched the comrades from the Offenbach volunteer fire department there with three vehicles. Our 21 volunteers supported five operations in the Hanau city area well into the night. After around 6.5 hours, the local incident command released our personnel and they were able to return home.
