Tips for child safety:
- Explain the dangers of open fires to children. Practice what to do in an emergency (recognize danger, alert adults, leave the home, make an emergency call).
- Practise age-appropriate handling - for example by safely lighting and blowing out a tea light.
- Do not leave children alone with burning candles (Advent wreath, Christmas tree) without supervision.
- Provide suitable extinguishing agents. Children may also have the motor skills to extinguish sparks or small flames with a flower sprayer, watering can or extinguishing spray if they do not put themselves in danger.
- Always make sure that table fireworks, firecrackers or sparklers are handled correctly and help the children to use them. Sparklers, for example, are very hot and can cause burns.
- Do not let your children play with unexploded rockets or similar pyrotechnic remnants: Fireworks are explosives and can explode suddenly!
- Be aware of burns: Cool the wound with lukewarm water for up to 15 minutes, do not use ice. In the event of extensive burns, call the emergency services.
- In an emergency, call the fire department on 112. Even during the holidays and between the years, more than one million people in the fire departments are ready for emergencies.
