In his work, Dominik Gussmann not only combines printing processes with contemporary forms of image creation, but also demonstrates the potential of printmaking techniques. His working method is characterized by a love of experimentation that always seeks to expand the boundaries of "classic" intaglio printing.
The title Winter Landscape refers to both the exhibition and a three-part work by Dominik Gussmann. The triptych, which is typical of Gussmann's working method, consists of photo etchings based on three photographs that reveal an empty landscape and are translated into the medium of intaglio printing using a photo-chemical process. However, it is not a simple reproduction of the same image in a different technique, but rather this form of image transfer that constitutes the core of Gussmann's artistic work.
By translating the photographic source images into the intaglio print, all the previously light areas are transformed into dark tonal values. The result is an alienation that makes the sky appear as a black surface, for example, and the landscape reaching to the horizon as a monochrome structure. The etchings are not only reminiscent of snow-covered landscapes, such as those found in Caspar David Friedrich's paintings, but the photographic source images literally dissolve into an abstract flatness.
The work described in this way is exemplary of Gussmann's artistic approach, which always aims to expand the boundaries of "classic" intaglio printing. In doing so, Gussmann not only combines printing processes with industrial and digital forms of image production, but above all the exhibition shows the potential of printmaking techniques to make visible forms of image translation that have long since lost their conscious visibility in today's flood of images.
HfG graduate and printer Dominik Gußmann is interested in various printing techniques and the history of printing. He gives recurring lithographic demonstrations on the historical bar press in the Haus der Stadtgeschichte and sets up a printing workshop for the city of Offenbach as part of a contract for work.
