Trump's basic concepts of international politics: Goethe Lecture on 3.7.2017

In his lecture, Dr. Kroll addressed the following topic: The international policy of the United States under Donald Trump is difficult to classify. Conventional theories of international relations and international law seem only partially able to describe the Trump phenomenon in its impulsiveness and sometimes contradictory nature. The lecture therefore attempts to understand Trump's international policy on the basis of its own terminology. As early as the election campaign, Trump called for the United States to be unpredictable in order to be able to implement its international interests more successfully. Most recently, Trump frequently used the concept of fairness to describe his expectations of international cooperation. The lecture uses current examples of US security, climate and trade policy to illustrate what Trump's doctrine of unpredictability and fairness might consist of.

Dr. Stefan Kroll is a research associate at the Chair of International Organizations at the Cluster of Excellence "The Formation of Normative Orders" at Goethe University Frankfurt. In the summer semester of 2015, he represented the Chair of International Relations and Foreign Policy at the University of Trier. Kroll has conducted research at various university and non-university centers, including the LOEWE focus "Extrajudicial and Judicial Conflict Resolution" (Frankfurt), the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Göttingen), the Munk School of Global Affairs (Toronto) and the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (Frankfurt). Kroll is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of International Relations.
