On Tuesday, April 10, Prof. Dr. Mamadou Diawara, Professor of Ethnology at Goethe University Frankfurt and Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence "The Formation of Normative Orders" at Goethe University Frankfurt, spoke on the topic: In the Name of the Law. More than ever before, property rights are at the center of the actions of companies and governments. This applies not only to those countries in which this "normative order" originated, but also to those where it was introduced for colonial reasons.
But how is this intellectual property right understood and experienced in different contexts?
Using examples from Africa, Prof. Diawara questioned how the colonial genealogy of copyright law is asserted on the continent. He explained how the problem of the globalization of property law relates to countries and societies that implement their own norms, as well as how these are negotiated by actors, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa.

Mamadou Diawara is Professor of Anthropology at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence "The Formation of Normative Orders" and Deputy Director of the Frobenius Institute.
He is a member of the Council of the International African Institute, London. He was a member of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and John G. Diefenbaker Fellow at the Université Laval, Canada.
He is the founding director of Point Sud, Center of Research on Local Knowledge, Bamako, Mali.
His main areas of research include: popular culture, local knowledge, development anthropology, local media in Africa versus Western media.
