Hello, weathermen and climate fans
It's super cool that you've landed here - welcome to SCAPE°. What can you expect? An exhibition with weather and climate you can touch. Because SCAPE° is not a dry and dusty museum. Here you can try everything out for yourself! Feel like a real scientist as you research, investigate and experiment. Curious? You can discover this and much more ...
The weather
Chaos pendulum: This is how crazy the weather is.
The weather is quite a whirlwind, isn't it? It surprises us anew every day and is difficult to predict. Our chaos pendulum shows you why. Before you knock it, you're probably thinking: "Sure, it's going to swing back and forth." But no! The pendulum does what it wants. Because it can never be pushed in exactly the same way, it always moves in a completely different way.
And that's exactly how our weather behaves. It may look simple from the outside, but on the inside it's total chaos. A tiny change here or there and everything is different than expected. But don't worry, on the whole it follows a certain pattern - depending on where you are in the world at what time of year.
Weather makes patterns: How air moves.
Sure - people walk, birds fly, trains run. But have you ever thought about how air moves? We can't normally see it. Except when smoke, steam, dust or leaves dance through the air - in vortices. Because that's how air moves. And no other way!
You can nudge the "air" on the touchscreen and see how vortices form - this is called turbulence. In an airplane, they not only ensure empty cups and full lunch bags, but also faster mixing of energy, heat and air masses in the atmosphere. A whirlwind is a great thing.
The climate
Climate scale: How high is your CO₂ footprint?
Hey - did you know that we can all contribute to climate protection? It's really amazing what a difference our daily decisions can make. Whether we cycle to work, turn down the heating a little or reach for the vegetables more often - every little action counts. We want to illustrate this with the climate scale.
You can use the climate scale to test how much CO₂ is produced in your everyday life - in a fun way. Simply grab the CO₂ bags and hang them on the scales. This will tell you in a flash which activities or foods are good or bad for the climate. A great way to get a feel for where you can best start to reduce your own CO₂ footprint. By the way: children as young as four can have fun with the scales. So, let's get started!
SCAPE°-Gym: How much electricity do you generate yourself?
Have you ever thought about what is behind a kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity? Imagine it's the energy your hairdryer or kettle uses in an hour. Doesn't sound like much at first - you think! Get on one of our fitness bikes and try to generate electricity yourself. After a minute you'll realize: Wow, energy is really precious!
Electricity consumption and climate change are closely linked. Sure, in Germany more than half of our electricity already comes from renewable energy - that's really great! But it will take until 2045 before our electricity needs are fully covered by them. Until then, every kilowatt hour saved is an important step towards climate protection.
