Offenbach is celebrating a very special anniversary this year: 250 years ago, Johann André founded one of the first music publishers in the German-speaking world here. Subsequently, music in the form of printed sheet music traveled via trade routes from Offenbach to European cities and later to America. But Johann André could not have known this when he founded the publishing house in 1774: He laid the foundation stone for the oldest existing music publishing house. The founder's son, Johann Anton André, also made history when he traveled to Vienna in 1799 and acquired the entire artistic estate of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart: over 273 original Mozart manuscripts.

The adult education center is also celebrating the publisher's anniversary with guided tours and lectures, especially as we have one of the experts of the André music archive in our ranks. The musicologist Birgit Grün, who is also head of the culture program at the vhs, has researched this topic. So what could be more natural than for her to take us all along to the exhibition "Mozart, André, Offenbach - The Sound of the Time Capsule" in the Haus der Stadtgeschichte this year. Look forward to this journey through time.

Themed tours of the adult education center in cooperation with the Haus der Stadtgeschichte Offenbach am Main

The exhibition at the Haus der Stadtgeschichte uses instruments, furniture, impressive historical documents and all kinds of original details to illustrate the history of the publishing house and its impact on cultural history, in some cases worldwide. The themed tour provides an overview and explains selected cultural-historical references from the founding year 1774 to the 1920s.

Meeting point is at the museum ticket office, admission is free, registration at the vhs Offenbach is requested but not mandatory.

Summer, sun, vacation feeling AND a bit of education, sport and culture. That's great with our extensive program. We have put together a few special events here, the others can be found as always in the program booklet or on our website. We look forward to seeing you!

The fifth nationwide Digital Day took place this year and the Offenbach Adult Education Center was there again! On June 6, 2024, interested people attended various lectures and workshops under the motto "Digitales zum Kaffee" and got into conversation with each other. They learned about artificial intelligence (AI) with ChatGPT, discovered new worlds with VR glasses (virtual reality), tried out the vhs learning platform "Digital World" and the Offenbacher Mängelmelder. The 3D printer, on loan from the city library, was a particular eye-catcher. It was used to create specially designed vhs shopping tokens that visitors to the Digital Day could take away with them. There was fun and games with the wheel of fortune and a "digital" memory game - and of course coffee and cookies with a digital motif to match the theme.

One of the highlights was the Simply Digital Café. Questions about cell phones, laptops and the Internet were answered and tips and suggestions exchanged in a relaxed atmosphere. The next Einfach Digital Café with the support of volunteer digital scouts will take place on July 4 from 5.00 - 7.00 pm. You don't need to register for this free event, just drop by on the 2nd floor of the vhs!

The aim of the Digital Day is to promote digital participation. It is organized by the "Digital for all" initiative. It is backed by a broad alliance of 28 organizations from the fields of civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector. The aim is to enable everyone in Germany to navigate the digital world with confidence and self-determination.

Since June 3, an exhibition by the Offenbach Women's Office has been on display on the second floor of the vhs. On display are "13 feminist messages", which were created two years ago as part of International Girls' Day. From the statements submitted at the time, 13 were selected, designed by the graphic design office turbo type and printed on postcards. "Being a girl is great!", "Be brave!" or "My clothes are never your excuse!" are the feminist statements that, thanks to the great success of the cards, can now be borrowed by interested institutions from the Women's Office as a traveling exhibition on large-format A1 boards.

The pictures are intended to be encouraging and a powerful greeting for women and girls in Offenbach and beyond. Come and have a look (on the way to our cafeteria) and let yourself be inspired.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog containing explanatory texts and thought-provoking questions to stimulate further discussion.

If you are interested in unfolding the power of the Offenbach girls in other places, the Women's Office will be happy to provide further information and support.

It's almost time again - save the date! Our new Fall / Winter 2024 program will be published on 30.07.2024 and will be available for you at the vhs, in the town hall and (almost) everywhere in the city.
