  • "Good choice" with the vhs Offenbach

The right to education and the freedom to exercise this right throughout one's life is one of the great achievements of our democracy.

The year 2023 is an election year in Offenbach: mayoral elections, elections to the Senior Citizens' Council and the state elections in Hesse. Whenever and wherever you "have a political choice", it is worth making a well-informed decision, finding out about regional and national issues, knowing the facts, discovering differences and, if necessary, similarities on topics and discussing how big or small these differences are and what consequences can be drawn from them.

Political decisions influence our everyday lives. Form your own opinion on current issues in politics, society and life. Learn more about facts and backgrounds. At vhs Offenbach events and lectures, you can meet politicians, experts and interested citizens and get into conversation!

Your vhs Offenbach - always a "good choice"!

Global failure?

The West between arrogance and self-hatred in the livestream - vhs.wissen live

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the West seems more united than ever before. After all, the aim is to defend the values of freedom and democracy. But behind the supposed unity, the first fractures quickly became apparent.

In 2008, she was appointed to the professorship for "Ethnology of Colonial and Postcolonial Orders" at Goethe University Frankfurt, where she has headed the "Frankfurt Research Center Global Islam" since 2014.

  • Successful summer program

Children program their own computer game

Vacation time is also the time for exciting courses at the vhs. Today we would like to report on one of our many courses and invite you, and especially your children, to join us on one of our next vacation courses.

In August, nine children from the 5th grade upwards took part in the course "Create my own computer game with Scratch". Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Scratch is an educational and visual programming language that allows young people to easily create digital stories, games and animations. Students learn the basis of computing concepts such as loops and conditions and gain an understanding of important math concepts such as coordinates, variables and random numbers.

Under the guidance of Caroline Janouschek, an educator who has been working at vhs Offenbach for 11 years, the children not only learned about media, but also acquired the relevant media skills. "The children come to the vhs and are open and want to discover. Here they can program their own computer game in a playful way, completely without pressure, go in search of errors themselves and clarify the questions of "why". As the course instructor, I am the translator of the digital world into the analog world," says Caroline Janouschek.

And what do the future game programmers say about the course? "We learned the basics here and we'll continue at home." "We had a lot of freedom when programming." "We could even use the cell phones." (For the English translations.)

Everyone agreed that they would love to come back.

Have we piqued your interest? You can find more courses for children and young people by clicking on the headline or the picture.
