The shell is already in place: work on the Humboldt School is progressing rapidly

04.08.2023

The Humboldt School is currently receiving a new building (back right) with modern childcare and functional rooms. The elementary school should be able to open the building at the beginning of 2024.

The new school building is a timber frame construction. The prefabricated components made from the renewable raw material not only enable rapid construction progress, but also stand for high energy efficiency. Even the staircase and elevator shaft are made of particularly hard wood.

Construction work on the school site between Odenwaldring and Humboldtstraße only began in June with the concreting of the floor slab. On behalf of Stadtwerke and its project development company OPG, which is managing the project for the City of Offenbach and its Office for Planning and Construction, the general contractor is constructing a two-storey angular building according to the plans of Frankfurt architects Christl + Bruchhäuser.

The shell of the Humboldt School was completed in just three weeks thanks to the timber frame construction method. The staircase is also made of wood.

Barrier-free access

The new school building will be barrier-free thanks to an elevator and will house a cafeteria, kitchen, sanitary facilities and childcare rooms, thus relieving the existing main building of space.

The city of Offenbach is investing 8.41 million euros in the school site. In addition to the new building, this includes the demolition of a pavilion, the renewal of the sewer pipes and the redesign of large parts of the schoolyard.

With this investment, we are also taking account of the sharp rise in pupil numbers in the Senefelderquartier and are significantly upgrading the school location with the extension and its modern care and function rooms.

Interior work to be completed by 2024

For the time being, however, the new school building still belongs to the craftsmen. The interior work has just begun, including the electrical installation and the installation of heating, ventilation and sanitary facilities. The work should be completed by the start of 2024. OPG project manager Jan Büttner estimates that the new building could be ready for occupancy in February. The outdoor facilities will then be redesigned.
