If you drive into Rumpenheim from Bürgeler Straße, you can see it from afar: the building at Landgraf-Friedrich-Straße 1, where the Rumpenheim citizens' initiative has been based since 2010. The building, which dates back to 1802, has been owned by the Stadtwerke Unternehmensgruppe/ Geschäftsfeld Immobilien since 2016. After the residents moved out of the first floor, it had the rooms renovated and is renting them to the new association KUNST.ORT.RUMPENHEIM, which also organizes the Rumpenheim Art Days, among other things. On Friday, March 16, the art floor will be handed over to the new users. According to its concept, the association wants to set up a center for artistic creation there and sublet rooms to artists. Exhibitions and other events are also planned. The striking building will also be made accessible to the public.

New heating systems, a new floor and coordinated window sills have now been installed.

But before that, the craftsmen were in the building. "We made an effort to do something good for the building," says Angelika Breyer, a building technician at Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft GBO in the Geschäftsfeld Immobilien division. New radiators now hang under the mullioned windows on the first floor and the walls have been given a fresh coat of paint. But not with just any paint: silicate paint was used to prevent damage to the old clay plaster on the walls. "This can absorb and release moisture," explains Angelika Breyer, "the plaster 'lives' and needs the moisture, but must not get wet."

The old windows should also retain as much of the charm of the past as possible. The old shutters will be refurbished at a later date. A sash bar window inside the apartment has survived around eight decades undamaged and is still closed with an old bolt. This relic may remain, the panes will be renewed and cemented. In addition, new interior window sills made of oiled beech will be installed and new floorboards laid to match. In total, the Geschäftsfeld Immobilien is investing around 70,000 euros here.

Around 110 square meters of space will then be available to the association, as well as part of the old vaulted cellar, which is located under half of the house. The association will also be able to use the attic, which is full of old beams.
