City of Offenbach

Offenbach Symphony

250 years of music publisher André

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2024
Prelude: 16.00 hrs
Start of concert: 5.00 pm

A single original Mozart, in the handwritten music of the most heavenly of all heavenly geniuses of the Viennese classical period, is still to be found in Offenbach am Main, our very special Mozart city. Two hundred years ago, almost half of Mozart's works were still in manuscript in the André music publishing house in Domstrasse. Most of it is now in various state libraries, but one last score is still in the vault of the Musikhaus.

It is Mozart's re-orchestration of the Violin Concerto No. 16 in E minor by the then highly esteemed Italian-English composer Giovanni Battista Viotti. Mozart's version is magnificent - the work takes on a fascinating dark glow.

We are accompanying the violin concerto with Mozart's overture to "Don Giovanni". And we also play a real, great Offenbach symphony, written right here in our city and therefore a diamond in the crown of the 250th anniversary year of the music publisher. Johann Anton André composed it at the same time as Beethoven's 'Fifth'; it made its way through the music world from Domstrasse. It is a masterpiece of Offenbach's musical history that will be performed on the 249th birthday of its composer, possibly for the first time in over 100 years, and will of course also be recorded on CD on this occasion.

The conductor is Douglas Bostock, internationally renowned for his exceptional understanding of the music of this era, among other things. The soloist in the Viotti/Mozart violin concerto is Maximilian Junghanns, who has been 2nd concertmaster since 2017 and is now principal 2nd violin in the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.
