Best conditions for streaming and working from home: GBO concludes agreement on fiber optic expansion
11.12.2025 – If one family member in an apartment regularly works from home while another streams series, fast and stable Internet with a high transmission rate is not only necessary for family peace. Stadtwerke Offenbach subsidiary GBO Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft mbH Offenbach, together with Baugenossenschaft Odenwaldring eG, has now concluded an agreement with Rehnig BAK Glasfaser GmbH to expand the fiber optic infrastructure within the company's own residential complexes for its tenants.
"Not only companies, but also the citizens of Offenbach benefit from an efficient digital infrastructure or are even dependent on it for work or voluntary work," says City Treasurer and responsible department head Martin Wilhelm. "It's good that GBO is now creating the conditions for residents in around 5,000 apartments in Offenbach to equip their homes for the increasing digital requirements."
"The agreement with Rehnig BAK Glasfaser GmbH gives all our tenants the freedom to choose their network operator," adds René Weber, one of the two GBO managing directors. Whether a property in Offenbach will receive a fiber optic connection or whether an expansion is planned can be checked via the online portals of the responsible network operators. There, all tenants - regardless of their housing association - have the opportunity to register their interest in a fiber optic connection. This can have a positive influence on further expansion. The Rehnig company itself is not a fiber optic provider.
Telecommunications provider not acting on behalf of GBO
"At the moment, more and more telecommunications companies are walking through our properties, making offers to tenants and claiming that they are coming on behalf of GBO," continues Renè Weber. "We expressly emphasize that this is not the case. If anyone claims that they are coming on our behalf, we ask our tenants to report this back to us."
Cabling only begins when the house connection is in place
If the tenants have commissioned a network operator, the latter will install the fiber optic house connection in the basement of the respective building. Comprehensive information about the upcoming work will be provided in good time.
Rehnig BAK Glasfaser GmbH will only wire the building once the house connection is in place. This means that only the company will lay the fiber optic cables from the house connection in the basement to the individual apartments. In this way, GBO wants to ensure that the work is carried out centrally and in a coordinated manner and that several companies do not intervene in the installation.
The GBO would also like to point out that the existing cable network will not be affected by the fiber optic work. GBO tenants can continue to use television and internet via the cable network as usual. There is no obligation to take out a fiber optic tariff.
