City of Offenbach

Decision to lease the marina was rescinded

26.04.2024 – At its meeting on April 24, the Offenbach City Council decided to withdraw its proposal to lease the marina in Offenbach Harbour. This item was therefore no longer on the agenda of the city council meeting on April 25.

Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke and the management of Mainviertel GmbH had agreed on this proposal to the municipal council in order to discuss the numerous questions that have arisen in the meantime, including from the tenants of the current tenant of the water area in the port, in peace between Mainviertel and those affected. The aim is to try to clarify these points in joint discussions.

"Some of the issues have only arisen in recent weeks and were not previously the subject of discussions between the residents and us," explains Mainviertel Managing Director Daniela Matha.

Due to the heated public debate, the award procedure is currently being reviewed internally with the relevant experts and departments. According to the current status, the chosen award procedure with the actual objective of a lease was also described with characteristics that could at least theoretically also be regarded as characteristics of a construction project due to the detailed description.

"In simple terms, this means that we proceeded in the same way as is legally required when leasing public land. We have refrained from double-checking ourselves with complicated procedures, as this saves time and taxpayers' money. This is also my basic expectation of my employees: to choose pragmatic solutions within the bounds of what is legally possible. To be honest, however, the heated debate means that we prefer to play it safe. The critical review has shown that we already know where there could be points of attack on our approach. It makes no sense whatsoever not to admit this and to want to go headlong into the wall. The project is not in a hurry. The aim is to create an attractive project for the city and the port. So we won't lose any ground if we withdraw the proposal," says Lord Mayor Dr. Felix Schwenke.

In 2011, the German Sustainable Building Council awarded Offenbach Harbour gold in the New Urban Quarter category.
