Installation of a bulkhead at the cascade weir

To protect the Innovation Campus site from flooding and heavy rainfall in the future, a cascade weir was anchored about 10 meters deep into the ground. Today, the centerpiece of the system was installed—a bulkhead weighing about 6.5 metric tons. It is approximately 15 centimeters thick, 4 meters high, and 1.30 meters wide.

In the future, the bulkhead will function like a giant backflow valve. During normal operation, it works fully automatically and can be raised and lowered hydraulically depending on the water level and operational requirements to precisely control the flow of water. This prevents water from the Main River from entering the sewer system due to backflow during high water levels and from flooding the site. During heavy rainfall, stormwater can be temporarily retained and released in a controlled manner.
