Facts & figures on the Rhine-Main model region
The activities of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area and those of the Kassel monocenter were bundled under the umbrella of the Rhine-Main Electromobility Model Region, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport. By covering different regional areas and including various electromobility applications, the entire spectrum of needs of electromobility users could be researched in the model region. The Rhine-Main conurbation extended geographically from Wiesbaden to Mainz, Frankfurt, Offenbach, Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg.
After the funding period from 2009 to 2011 was completed with fifteen successfully implemented demonstration projects, more than 490 electric vehicles put into operation and around 260 charging points installed as well as numerous infrastructure measures [see also: Projects 2009-2011], the Regional Project Management Office continued its mandate until 2016. On the one hand, the ongoing demonstration projects focusing on electromobility in mobility and logistics chains were supervised, while on the other, the Regional Project Management Office implemented further project ideas with new and existing implementation partners.
In 2017, Offenbach's involvement was transferred to the Electromobility Office - Federal Project Management Office.
The Rhine-Main model region operated under the strategic focus "Electric mobility in mobility and logistics chains". In 2012, the projects focusing on mobility chains founded an "Electric Mobility Alliance" with the aim of offering various user groups simple and manageable application models. In terms of content, the "Electric Mobility Alliance (opens in a new tab)" is using technical innovations to offer and test low-threshold services for different electric mobility customers, as well as striving for standardized access for external use of the vehicle pool, such as a booking platform and access technology in combination with the e-ticket of the regional transport associations.
In 2012, another key project focus was transferred to the model government activities. This includes the technology projects at Frankfurt Airport with a focus on logistics chains. The declared aim of the overall project is to reduce emissions from aircraft handling and the ground traffic required for this at Frankfurt Airport. The projects are presented in a joint visualization and the brand"E-PORT AN (opens in a new tab)" with the partners Lufthansa Group, Fraport, Modellregion/BMVI/NOW and the Hessian initiative'strom-bewegt (opens in a new tab)'.
