16.1 million journeys on Offenbach city buses
30.03.2026 – Stadtwerke Offenbach operates nine city bus routes in Offenbach and ensures that people get to work, school, sports or shopping. In 2025, 16.1 million journeys were counted on Offenbach's city bus services, more than ever before. In 2024, the figure was 14.6 million journeys.
The passenger numbers are determined using counting devices on the doors of the buses: all passengers getting on and off are recorded using a light shower. The most journeys, namely 4.7 million, were counted on route 101, which is also Offenbach's longest city bus route.
Expanded service, optimized routes and Deutschlandticket ensure increase in passenger numbers
With the timetable change in December 2024, Stadtwerke expanded the city bus service and optimized the route planning: Thanks to the expansion of services, the city buses now run every hour on Sundays between five and eight and take people who work shifts to work. There are also better connections to the city districts in the evenings. Stadtwerke has also optimized the routes.
"On the one hand, passengers benefit from the adjustments thanks to direct connections and better transfer options, and on the other hand, the e-buses, which have already made up around half of the city bus fleet since 2021, can be used more efficiently and charged more effectively at the charging station at Kaiserlei," says Anja Georgi, Managing Director of Stadtwerke's Geschäftsfeld Mobilität division. "The increase in passenger numbers now shows that the offer has been well received. The Deutschlandticket is another factor in the increase in passenger numbers on city bus services."
Less noise, less congestion and fewer emissions
Anyone who switches from car to public transport actively contributes to improving the quality of life in Offenbach: With fewer cars on the road, there is less congestion on the roads, noise pollution is reduced and exhaust emissions are lower. According to data from the Federal Environment Agency, an average car with a petrol engine emits 165 grams of greenhouse gases per passenger kilometer driven, compared to an average of 94 grams per passenger kilometer for a diesel bus and only 62 grams for e-buses (based on the average German electricity mix).
In 2025, around 50 percent of the mileage covered by Offenbach's city bus services was covered by e-buses running on green electricity. Passengers on Offenbach's city buses are therefore traveling in a particularly environmentally friendly way.
