City of Offenbach

The Bürgel cemetery

The inner stone walls in this part of the cemetery show the growth of this part of the town, which was incorporated into Offenbach in 1909.

Bürgel Cemetery is currently one of the smaller cemeteries in Offenbach, covering 42,000 square meters. If you enter it from Arendsstraße through the main entrance, you will find the modern low-rise building of the funeral hall, which opened in 1963.

A copper installation by the artist Eberhard Fiebig, which caused a lot of discussion at the time, catches the eye in the skylight at the front. A small organ provides musical accompaniment for the funeral services.

Around the mourning hall, tall trees frame a lawn on which an old sandstone cross reminds onlookers of the Christian hope of resurrection:

"I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me
shall live even if he dies."

The engraving with the words of Jesus can be deciphered with some difficulty. The inner stone walls in this part of the Bürgel cemetery are a clear sign of the growth of this part of the town, which was incorporated into Offenbach in 1908 and where the German Reichstag met in 1018.

Old trees are characteristic

Characteristic of the old part of the cemetery are the trees along the main path, some of which are over 100 years old. To the right and left of the path are graves with the names of old, respected burgher families, such as the grave of the last mayor of the town of Bürgel. Kaspar Lammert, born on 13.01.1861, died on 16.06.1937, was mayor until the incorporation of Bürgel on 1 April 1908 and then head of Bürgel until 1930.

In earlier times, the Bürgel cemetery was located directly next to St. Pancratius Catholic Church. The poet Sophie Laroche was buried there in 1807.

The expansion area

The expansion area

As you continue along the green-lined paths, the various cemetery walls reveal the constant growth of this final resting place.

By spring 2007, the cemetery had been extended by almost 19,000 square meters to the north and now covers 40,000 m², including a Jewish burial ground.
