Plant trail at the new cemetery

The plant trail at the new cemetery runs alongside the new children's burial ground. The ornamental area is around 40 meters long and is designed as a dry river course. 44 different shrubs, perennials and woody plants grow here. They were planted by the gardeners from the public utilities department. Two honeycomb-shaped raised beds form the beginning and end of the plant path.

The flowering plants were selected in such a way that they provide food for insects one after the other throughout the warm season. This is similar to humans: Tastes differ and bees prefer different flowers than butterflies, for example. Which plants grow here and which insect species particularly like to fly to which flowers is explained on labels on the area. These have been lovingly illustrated by graphic designer Manuela Olten.

The illustrated signs show which plants grow here, their characteristic features and which insects like to fly to them. For example, the Spanish bluebell and the angel's-tear narcissus are particularly popular with bees, bumblebees and butterflies, the yellow lady's mantle is only used by bees, the common hazel grouse is used by fungus gnats and ants and the fragrant jasmine Erectus is used by butterflies, bees, wasps, bumblebees, beetles and mosquitoes to sip nectar.

Visitors to the cemetery are cordially invited to find out more about the plants and insects they provide a habitat for. Children in particular, including school classes and kindergarten groups, are very welcome.

If you would like to look up the plants you saw on site again at home, you can click through the picture gallery with illustrations.
