Born in Braunschweig in 1853 as the child of a cobbler, Ulrich learned the trade of metal turner. His wanderings, during which he came into contact with the workers' movement, led him to Offenbach in 1872: the city became his second home. In 1875, the controversial speaker, who was briefly imprisoned for "incitement to class hatred", was one of the youngest delegates at the founding party conference of the German Socialist Workers' Party (SPD from 1890). Party comrades also appointed him editor of the social democratic "Neue Offenbacher Tages-Zeitung", which he co-founded, and he later became editor of the "Offenbacher Abendblatt".
Champion of social democracy
At the same time, one of the longest parliamentary careers in German history began: in 1885, Ulrich was one of the first Social Democrats to be elected to the state parliament of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. He was also a member of the German Reichstag for decades and was the first SPD politician in the Offenbach city parliament from 1896 to 1918. In February 1919, Carl Ulrich was elected President of the People's State of Hesse - comparable to today's Minister President. During his term of office until 1928, the elementary schools were established, among other things. He died in Offenbach City Hospital in 1933.
As a politician, Ulrich presented himself as a pragmatist: "We are not floating in the clouds, we live on earth," he called out to his comrades. In his dealings with his political opponents, too, the pioneer of social democracy was more interested in exchange than conflict - so a number of Carl Ulrich bridges were built on an intellectual level.
