Memories of joyful moments
Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to parents. However, when the unthinkable happens, a lovingly designed place can possibly make the grief a little more bearable. With this in mind, Stadtwerke Offenbach has now opened a new children's burial ground at the New Cemetery in Offenbach.
The area covers around 650 square meters. An intermediate section designed with white gravel and coarse stones creates a direct connection to the Sternenkinderfeld. The Stadtservice gardeners have landscaped the open space with colorful flowers and a small watercourse. "Our aim was to symbolize the flow of life and to keep alive the memory of colourful, joyful moments with the little ones," says Andreas Bär, a planner at the municipal cemeteries. An undulating wooden park bench invites visitors to linger on the site and perhaps strike up a conversation with others who have been affected. It is also possible to design the grave with your own stone.
The first burial in the children's burial ground took place in late summer 2022 - the previous area for this in the new cemetery was fully occupied. Now around 30 spaces are available again. The district cemeteries in Bürgel and Bieber also have small fields especially for children's burials.
