Liberal publisher and patron of the arts
A neoclassical temple façade at the main entrance to the Old Cemetery, next to the mourning hall, catches the eye. It is the burial place of the Huck family: they were co-owners of a type foundry and engineering company founded in Offenbach in 1842 and shaped the newspaper landscape throughout Germany.
The representative memorial commemorates above all the son of the company founder, August Huck (1849-1911): in 1888, he converted the company into a public limited company and became a newspaper publisher in Frankfurt am Main. In 1887, he founded the Nürnberger Generalanzeiger, which later became the Nürnberger Zeitung. In 1888, he achieved a considerable circulation of 160,000 copies with the Breslau Generalanzeige. He was also the founder of the Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten, the Münchner Zeitung, the Bayerische Zeitung, the Württemberger Zeitung and the Kasseler Neuesten Nachrichten.
Later, Huck also bought other newspapers such as the Stettiner Neueste Nachrichten and the Leipziger Abendzeitung. He also owned several type foundries, typesetting machines and paper factories that produced the newspapers. Thanks to his liberal attitude, his publishers and editors-in-chief were free to determine the direction of their papers. Huck also acted as a patron of the arts, as did his son Wolfgang later on - for example as a patron of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
Wolfgang Huck (1889 - 1967) took over the management of the newspaper group in 1911 and took over other papers. After the end of the Second World War, Huck initially rebuilt the printing plant of the Munich newspaper publishing house. In 1953, this was merged with the publishing house of the "Münchner Merkur", of which Huck remained senior manager until his death.
