Funeral hall to be modernized
The funeral hall at the New Cemetery is being extensively renovated and modernized. In the meantime, funeral services will be held in a lightweight hall on a central square in the cemetery grounds. With furnishings from the previous hall and clad interior walls, the building offers a high-quality interim solution.
"It's good that after years of temporary repairs and standstill, the renovation work is now becoming audible and visible," says City Treasurer and Chairman of the Supervisory Board Martin Wilhelm. "Our aim is to offer relatives a dignified ambience for saying goodbye to their loved ones. The employees of the cemetery, the administration and the crematorium should also have a good working environment here."
Following the demolition work, work on the shell of the new cooling building has been underway since mid-October. It will be integrated into the existing building structure of the mourning hall. The roof work has also begun: Here, the roof surface is being renewed and insulated. The restoration of the Rosenheim windows is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2026. A specialist company with proven expertise throughout Germany will be responsible for repairing the decades-old glazing.
The work should be completed in spring 2027. By then, the mourning hall will not only have a new ventilation system and buffer storage, which will also allow the rooms to be heated in winter - it will also be barrier-free: The foyer on the first floor will have an elevator and disabled-friendly sanitary facilities.
