50,000 flower bulbs planted in one hour

30.12.2025 – Blooming colorfulness needs to be prepared well in advance: Stadtwerke Offenbach's greenery department commissioned the planting of early bloomers some time ago. 250,000 flower bulbs are to beautify the city area from February onwards. The flower bulb planting machine from the Dutch company JUB was ordered for this purpose. It was in use in Offenbach for one and a half days: areas on Nordring, Mühlheimer Straße, Mainzer Ring and Am Maingarten were planted.

City treasurer and responsible department head Martin Wilhelm also came by here on the Main and watched as the tractor-like machine lifts the grass with sharp blades, drops the onions underneath from a large funnel-like attachment and lowers the sod again as it moves on.

"Many Offenbach residents cycle along Am Maingarten every day or go for a walk here," said Martin Wilhelm, who often cycles along here himself. "That's why it's nice to see an eye-catcher blossom on this grassy area in spring."

500 square meters were planted with around 50,000 flower bulbs by the machine in around an hour. An experienced team member from the greenery department would have spent a good ten working days on their knees to sink the bulbs into the ground.

Mixture of daffodils and tulips blooms from February to May

The company came up with something special at the Maingarten: the flower bulbs were planted in the large open area in the abstract shape of a tulip calyx, explained Tatjana Kraaijeveld from JUB.

"We chose the 'Appeldoorn' mixture for the composition of the flowers," said Melanie Gessner, head of the Civil Engineering department and also responsible for greenery at Stadtservice. "It consists of early-flowering daffodils and late-flowering tulips, so we have flowers here from February to May. And according to the catalog, the mixture is not only robust, but also sustainable: the plants should bloom again and again for at least seven years."
