Main Cleanup: 50 volunteers tidied up the banks of the Main in Offenbach
15.09.2023 – Around 50 volunteers collected two cubic meters of waste on the banks of the River Main in Offenbach on Saturday, September 9, as part of the supra-regional Main Cleanup day of action - including lots of packaging waste, gas bottles and even a bicycle.
The waste collection campaign on the banks of the Main took place as part of the MainCleanup campaign, a further development of RheinCleanup. In the past two years, the campaign was organized by the Clean Offenbach staff unit in cooperation with Stadtwerke Offenbach's Stadtservice. This year, the cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt have jointly promoted the campaign. In addition to the 50 participants on the Offenbach side, a further 50 volunteers took part on the Frankfurt side of the Main. The clean-up was carried out both on land and from boats in the water. The clean-up campaign not only helps to maintain the banks of the Main as a recreational area worth living in, but also prevents waste from entering the sea via the Main and Rhine and becoming a danger to marine animals.
Stadtwerke Offenbach's Stadtservice equipped the participants on the Offenbach side with gloves, grippers and garbage bags and then took the full garbage bags for disposal. Mülli, the walking act from the "Respect Offenbach" campaign, was also out and about on the banks of the Main, motivating the volunteers and drawing the attention of passers-by to the problem of carelessly discarded packaging waste.
At the end of the clean-up campaign, the FES invited people to the "Paulaner Platzhirsch" at Ruderdorf in Frankfurt with the Clean Frankfurt staff unit and its "CleanFfm" campaign. Around 60 people came together there to fortify themselves after the successful campaign. Before the meal, rappers Tao and Sign presented their songs, including the bio-waste rap that Tao wrote on behalf of Stadtwerke Offenbach.
The Main Cleanup was a complete success and shows how citizens can work together for a clean environment. Another joint campaign with Frankfurt on the banks of the Main is planned for next year.
