Change of location for perennials
29.03.2023 – Some of the perennials on the central reservation of Mühlheimer Straße have been moved to the central reservation of Odenwaldring by Stadtwerke Offenbach's green team.
Over the past few weeks, the turf has been removed from an area of almost 150 square meters at the new location and the ground prepared for the new vegetation. A layer of mineral mulch is now being applied around the shrubs.
In Mühlheimer Straße, the civil engineering department of the municipal utility company will soon be constructing the last section of the new sewer at Karl-Herdt-Wege. The pipes will run where the perennials were located further up. If the boreholes were opened, the plants would have been destroyed.
That is why the gardeners from the municipal utility company have now saved the plants while they were still dormant in winter. Silver ear grass, purple ragwort, mullein, thyme species, summer asters and others have found a new home on the Odenwaldring between Waldstraße and Ringcenter. And they will stay there. Mühlheimer Straße will be planted with new plants after the sewer is laid.
Substrates and mulch types are tested
The flowering perennial beds were planted two years ago on a total of around 1000 square meters of the central strip of Mühlheimer Straße. They are a cooperative project between the city's Department of Planning and Building, which planned the planting and also approved the replanting, and the greenery department of the municipal utilities. The project observes and documents which of the various substrates and types of mulch used there enable the plants to thrive best under the conditions of climate change.
It was already known at the planning stage that the sewer construction on Mühlheimer Strasse was imminent. However, the exact date has not yet been set. It would have been possible to simply not plant the 10 to 20 percent of the central strip required for the work. However, this would not have created an attractive overall picture for the thousands of road users commuting in and out every day. It was therefore jointly decided to design the central reservation without any gaps and to plant the plants before the work began.
During the work, there may be temporary traffic restrictions on Mühlheimer Straße and Odenwaldring.
