Stadtservice is committed to sustainability

22.09.2025 – Solar systems produce climate-friendly electricity, several commercial vehicles and sweepers run on electricity, resources such as energy and paper are saved in all departments, be it through optimized routes, improved technologies or increasing digitalization: For several years now, the municipal utility subsidiaries have been paying more attention to protecting the environment in all tasks.

The environmental management of ESO Stadtservice GmbH (ESO SV) and ESO Offenbacher Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH (ESO DL) has now been EMAS certified for the first time. Both companies are obliged to do so under the Energy Efficiency Act.

The certificate confirms the environmental performance and contributes to the sustainability development of the municipal utilities. With the EMAS logo, the companies demonstrate to the outside world that they are constantly striving to improve their environmental targets.

It has now been officially confirmed that we meet the core requirements of the EMAS system: We continuously improve our environmental impact, ensure efficient and transparent processes and are committed to a comprehensible and verifiable sustainability strategy. This is a significant milestone for our Stadtservice.

Peter Walther, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Offenbach Holding and both now certified companies

This is thanks to the commitment and shared responsibility of the employees for the environment and sustainability. During the certification process, the assessor expressly praised the commitment, the well-thought-out responses, the clearly structured processes and the motivation of the Stadtservice team.

All processes and procedures were reviewed

It was hard work across all departments, coordinated by Christine Herkströter, EMAS officer at Stadtservice. She was supported by Nina Zimmer, responsible for organizational development at Stadtwerke. The external assessor took a close look at Stadtservice and ESO DL. All processes and procedures were reviewed, documented and examined for potential improvements to protect the environment. He showed how the environmental management system can be incorporated into all future decisions in both companies. One aspect was the vehicle fleet, whose heavy commercial vehicles currently still have high CO2 emissions. The two certified companies would like to continuously reduce these emissions when purchasing new vehicles.

The fact that the employees stuck with it and looked for innovative solutions for more climate-friendly processes is a great success and will pay off in the long term and sustainably.

Martin Wilhelm, City Treasurer and responsible department head

The final step in the complex process was the signature of the certifier on the environmental statement of the two companies. With this signature, ESO Stadtservice GmbH and ESO Offenbacher Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH can be entered as one organizational unit in the EMAS register at the Kassel Chamber of Industry and Commerce. However, there is no time to take a breather: certification is only awarded for one year and must be obtained again and again. The revalidation is scheduled for next summer.
