Additional sections of the sidewalk are being replaced
25.08.2026 – When funds are tight, the Civil Engineering Department of Stadtwerke Offenbach’s Stadtservice division must set priorities for sidewalk repairs: Where are the areas most severely damaged—whether by tree roots pushing up the pavement or by trucks—and where is pedestrian traffic the heaviest? This year, too, this list was compiled using records from the Civil Engineering Department’s street inspectors as well as reports from the public submitted to the city’s defect reporting system. Most of the items on the list have already been addressed.
The Civil Engineering Department of the Geschäftsfeld Stadtservice at Stadtwerke Offenbach is responsible for managing the repairs. This includes selecting the sections to be renovated, preparing construction plans, drafting specifications, soliciting bids, contracting with the construction companies, as well as supervising construction, conducting quality control, and accepting the completed work. The actual surface renovations are carried out by external specialized firms.
“As part of the city’s investment program, a total of 1.6 million euros is being allocated to the maintenance of roads, sidewalks, and bike paths, as well as civil engineering structures such as bridges,” says City Treasurer and Head of the relevant department, Martin Wilhelm. “A portion of these funds is being used to renovate larger sections of sidewalks in order to improve traffic safety and eliminate tripping hazards. Although our financial leeway remains limited given the current budget situation, we are consistently addressing the most urgent measures and gradually improving conditions for pedestrians in Offenbach.”
About 330 square meters of sidewalk have already been renovated
Every year, Martin Wilhelm takes advantage of the summer months to inspect projects that were funded through the investment program. This year, he visited the current construction site on Untere Grenzstraße between Mühlheimer Straße and Hebestraße. There, Alexander Bartenstein, an employee of the Civil Engineering Department at Stadtwerke Offenbach’s Stadtservice division, explained the construction process to him, during which approximately 330 square meters of sidewalk are being renovated.
Sections of Blücherstraße totaling about 240 square meters of sidewalk have already been completed this year, as well as approximately 55 square meters near Waldstraße 59, about 46 square meters near Carl-Legien-Straße 24, and about 36 square meters of new sidewalk on Nahestraße. In addition, work has been commissioned to repair another 110 square meters of sidewalk at the corner of Schubertstraße and Jacques-Offenbach-Straße. Further sections are in the planning stages.
These large-scale renovations are supplemented by ongoing work carried out by employees of the Stadtservice department of Stadtwerke Offenbach. The team ensures on a daily basis that minor damage is repaired promptly. Regardless of the construction contracts that have been awarded, they handle minor repairs, the renewal of driveways and signage, as well as the repair of small sections of sidewalks throughout the city.
Report Damage to Sidewalks and Other Issues
Damage to sidewalks and other issues can be reported through the defect reporting system by specifying the exact location and, ideally, including a photo.
