City of Offenbach

Strong and reliable partner for Offenbach

Stadtwerke Offenbach can look back on an economically successful 2022 financial year. The result of Stadtwerke Offenbach Holding GmbH, the parent company, amounted to just under € 2.85 million and was thus € 450,000 higher than the previous year's result for 2021.

The results of its subsidiaries are consolidated in SOH GmbH. The very good result of the GBO housing company of EUR 3.42 million, which is not consolidated in SOH GmbH, also contributes to the success of the Stadtwerke Group.

The results of the four Geschäftsfeld Stadtservice, Mobilität, Stadtservice, Veranstaltungen and Events business areas showed positive developments across the board in the financial year and were largely able to stabilize the previous year's results. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic declined in 2022, but the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine and the Europe-wide energy price crisis left their mark. The price increases for services and materials, particularly in the construction industry, were particularly noticeable here.

Stable partner in challenging times

"In increasingly challenging times of upheaval, our municipal utilities are once again proving to be an absolutely reliable partner for the city and its citizens," says Offenbach's Lord Mayor and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SOH GmbH, Dr. Felix Schwenke. "In addition to the traditional activities of public services, the municipal utilities also contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of life in Offenbach with their investments," said the Lord Mayor.

"We are building the future together - and to underline this, we have launched a program with the same name for our around 1,100 employees," adds Stadtwerke Managing Director Peter Walther. The focus is on agile working: "This allows us to adapt our internal work processes and structures even more quickly and flexibly to current tasks and problems."

In the Stadtservice business field, sales increased by 300,000 euros to 44.63 million euros. Additional orders led to higher sales in the waste disposal division and special budgets increased sales in the public spaces division.

In the Geschäftsfeld Immobilien division, total sales increased by 33.32 million euros to 101.12 million euros. INNO-Innovationscampus Offenbach GmbH & Co. KG successfully sold an area of more than 30,000 square meters to the biotechnology company BioSpring at the end of 2022. Several high-tech production units with a total of around 1,500 new jobs are now being created there. BioSpring is one of Hessen's flagship companies in the booming biotechnology sector and will invest hundreds of millions in Offenbach in the long term.

The surplus of 3.42 million euros generated by the GBO housing association will be invested in refurbishment projects in existing buildings and new buildings and will not be included in the results of the Stadtwerke Group. More than EUR 356,000 was spent on the "Better living in Offenbach" (BliO) initiative, which is part of GBO, in 2022.

The measures to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine still had a negative impact on the Businessfeld Veranstaltungen segment at the beginning of the financial year. As the year progressed, however, the event industry recovered somewhat and additional revenue of EUR 754,000 was generated compared to the previous year. In total, the business field's revenue amounted to EUR 1.84 million.

In the Mobility Business Field, revenue fell by EUR 1.95 million compared to the previous year.
1.95 million euros compared to the previous year. This was due to a change in usage behavior as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the temporary introduction of the 9-euro ticket. Financial support from the federal and state governments, which is reported under other operating income, compensated for this development. "The fact that Stadtwerke is able to adapt to the current economic situation is demonstrated by its restructuring in mobility," emphasizes City Treasurer Martin Wilhelm. Despite uncertainties on the revenue side, the consolidation phase has been successful and the business area has achieved its economic goals in difficult times. In addition to the financial aid, the restructuring, which the employees themselves are driving forward with new ideas and a willingness to change, has also contributed to this.

Greater focus on sustainability

Building the future together - for Stadtwerke, this also means focusing more and more on the topic of sustainability. "The sum of all our activities in the Group is helping us to operate more and more sustainably," emphasizes Peter Walther. The fact that the topic is a priority is also reflected in internal restructuring: "A new working group brings together all activities and contributes to our sustainable development at various levels." In addition to the expansion of the e-vehicle fleet and the increasing use of district heating, this also includes social sustainability.
50 apprentices, more than ever before, Stadtwerke, with 1,093 employees and one of the largest employers in the region, is training more than it needs in eleven professions. In addition, almost 364,000 euros flowed into donations and sponsorship in 2022.

High surplus due to extraordinary balance sheet effects

The consolidated financial statements closed with a surplus of
36.61 million, whereby an extraordinary balance sheet effect due to the participation of EVO AG improved the result by around 32.1 million euros. The extraordinary effect on the Group's balance sheet can be explained by extraordinary income from the sale of EVO AG's shareholdings.

The Group's sales revenue amounted to 168.13 million euros, which represents a significant increase compared to the previous year (138.16 million euros). Investments in the reporting year amounted to 17.77 million euros.

The Group's equity ratio remained stable at 38.1%. The result of SOH GmbH includes - in addition to the expenses for the usual holding tasks - the pro rata assumption of losses for local public transport amounting to 9.27 million euros as well as distributions from associated companies. The investment in EVO AG made the largest contribution with a dividend of around 8.96 million euros.
