Sheep and goats on tour: New trailer for Mainbogen sheep farm

09.11.2022 – The Mainbogen sheep farm has a new means of transportation: the comfortable trailer is lined with shavings, provides plenty of fresh air and can load up to 40 animals on two levels. Stadtwerke Offenbach, which has been supporting this form of sustainable landscape management in the city since 2020, is now also financing the new trailer through a long-term advertising partnership.

Shepherdess Melanie Brost and SOH Managing Director Peter Walther take a look at the trailer together.

"This is a great relief for me," says shepherd Melanie Brost happily. "Before, I could only transport 10 to 15 animals at a time per tour." The approximately 120 sheep and 20 goats ensure sustainable landscape management in Offenbach and move around the city every few weeks. The grazing of the Mainbogen and other urban areas protects nature from scrub encroachment and promotes species-rich flora and fauna, also thanks to the natural fertilizer. The ruminants also help to connect otherwise isolated habitats by serving as a means of transportation for pollen and insects.

The fact that Melanie Brost works part-time at Stadtwerke in the Human Resources Competence Center does not stop her from getting more and more involved with animals: In addition to sheep and goats of various breeds, she now also keeps geese, chickens and five calves. "I admire Melanie Brost for her tireless commitment," said Stadtwerke Managing Director Peter Walther at the handover of the trailer, which now features the new Stadtwerke design. He assured the shepherdess and her flock of his continued support.

The double-decker has been in use since this summer and the animals have already learned to appreciate it: as soon as it rolls onto the meadow in Rumpenheim, it is surrounded by curious four-legged friends. "The sheep and goats love the trailer - they know that it takes them to the fresh greenery," says Melanie Brost. "They also like the view and want to ride on top." In turn, the walkers in the Mainbogen appreciate the view of the animals: the benches in front of their current location are always well occupied.
