Municipal utilities enable "new chapter of inclusion"

22.08.2023 – Another local sports club that is particularly committed to social causes is benefiting from Stadtwerke Offenbach's support: The sailing department of Offenbacher Ruderverein 1874 e.V. (ORV) will receive 3,000 euros to promote its inclusive sailing program.

The new SV-14 sailing boat also enables people with disabilities to enjoy very sporty sailing.

"With the sponsorship agreement, we are opening a new chapter of inclusion in our club," says Matthias Sator, youth and inclusion chairman at ORV. With the help of Stadtwerke, a new SV-14 sailing boat was purchased this summer, which also enables people with disabilities to enjoy very sporty sailing. The boat, whose sails are now adorned with the Stadtwerke logo, was christened "Inkludine Vera" at the beginning of August 2023. "This also makes it clear to the outside world that we are literally all in the same boat and that the self-determined participation of all people in Offenbach is important to us," says Stadtwerke Managing Director Peter Walther.

The boat was christened by Vera Heintze, honorary chairwoman of the ORV sailing department, Martin Wilhelm (left), head of the social services department, and Peter Walther, managing director of Stadtwerke.

"Inclusion has been a major concern for our youth department for more than 20 years," emphasizes Sator. A long-standing member, who is almost blind, is constantly questioning and promoting the importance of the topic. The ORV also regularly organizes sailing camps for young people with and without disabilities. "We are not only involved in social activities, but also in sport." For example, the "Blind Side" team came second in the regatta as part of the Mainuferfest in mid-June.

The Head of Department points out that the Main is not an easy sailing area with its currents and commercial shipping: "We always want a hand's breadth of water under the keel." A wheelchair user from a Frankfurt sailing club can now also use the boat, which was specially designed for inclusive sports. The common goal of all those involved is to sail the boat as fast as possible. "Our department is proud of our young people, who show so much energy and dedication." Sport can serve as a good example of solidarity in a barrier-free society, emphasizes Peter Walther.

The city and the Offenbach sports district are also addressing the issue: they are taking part in the nationwide activities for the Special World Games from September 10 to 16, 2023 with a week of inclusion in sport entitled "Limitless Fit".

The patron of the event is City Treasurer and Head of Social Affairs Martin Wilhelm. "Sport is a fantastic opportunity to bring people together and spend active time together, regardless of how different we are," says Wilhelm. "With the sponsorship of Stadtwerke and the commitment of the ORV, we are setting sail together for more inclusion and bringing the term to life. I wish all sailors lots of fun and good wind conditions on the water from now on."

In this context, the ORV sailing department is offering a public training session on Sunday, September 10, from 11 a.m., for which interested parties can register by e-mail: matthias.satorgmxde
