Presentation of the findings on the “Green Center”

In the prioritization process for the redesign of downtown squares, residents were able to vote on Platz der Deutschen Einheit, Stadthof, Hugenottenplatz, the plaza in front of the Marktplatz-Ost S-Bahn station, and Aliceplatz.

The forecourt of the Marktplatz-Ost S-Bahn station emerged as the favorite. It was chosen by a wide margin as the top location for redesign, a clear signal of its potential and the desire for visible change. The result confirms the previous expert analysis and underscores the square’s great potential.

Participants were able to select their favorite measures, and it became clear what qualities many people want to see in the city center. The measure involving the creation of water play areas scored particularly well. It exemplifies the need for refreshment in the city center.

The greening of building facades also received strong approval. It makes vegetation visible and effective, even in areas where traditional planting spaces are limited.

Green architecture that creates space was also rated positively; it is perceived as fostering a sense of identity and is designed as a protected green space.

Furthermore, the results show that the use and revitalization of public space also play a central role: varied seating options and well-designed shading enhance the quality of the environment and, in the long term, transform the city center into a vibrant, climate-adapted place.

The results of the public engagement process will be incorporated into the final versions of the report and will inform further planning. The catalog of measures and the overall concept will form the technical basis for the next steps. Building on this, detailed planning can then be carried out to gradually flesh out the identified options.
