City of Offenbach

No function room on Mitte ward for structural reasons

17.01.2025

The originally planned event hall on the roof of Station Mitte, the former Kaufhof building, cannot be built in the future either. Due to the statics of the building, it is not economically or structurally feasible. "The decision was not easy for us, but the result of the structural analysis of the roof left us with no other option than to refrain from building the hall," says Martin Wilhelm, City Treasurer and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Station Mitte GmbH.

Due to the city's difficult economic situation, the event hall included in the initial plans for Station Mitte had already been postponed until the middle of the year. Here, too, the project had a question mark over it. However, the stairwells were to be upgraded. Now that the inspection report from the commissioned structural engineer is available, the project will unfortunately have to be abandoned completely.

In addition, there may be slight changes to the layout of the first floor of the building, which will in future house the city library with a wide range of services for all Offenbach residents. It is currently being examined whether the area of the city library can be reduced slightly in order to create more commercial space, which in turn would generate more income. Even in the event of a possible expansion of the commercial space, the city library will continue to provide media for lending and reading on site on four floors, as well as hands-on activities and, above all, many workstations for schoolchildren and students.

Station Mitte GmbH Offenbach

Station Mitte GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of GBO Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft mbH Offenbach from Stadtwerke Offenbach's Geschäftsfeld Immobilien. GBO has purchased the shares of the previous property owner company of the former Galeria Kaufhof building in order to develop it into a cultural and meeting center with an innovative city library, retail space and café. Stadtwerke is thus supporting the transformation process of the city library and city center.
