"Drink more fruit!" warns a sign on the corner stall near Bleichstraße. The sales area of the small market stall consists of a bar-like counter. Fruit is indeed on offer in liquid form: lined up in bottles as pure apple Seccos, Seccos made from pears, cherries and currants, with quinces, medlars and other fruits.
"Fruit secco" pioneer Wolfgang Lazar stands behind the counter and explains: "On my first market day in Offenbach many years ago, I had to talk so much and relied on my powers of persuasion because I thought: 'Oh dear, how am I going to get rid of all this? Lazar's pressing and communication skills quickly won over customers, who literally snatched his liquid fruit out of his hands.
His fruit Seccos are elegantly sparkling fruit wines that are refined by the measured addition of carbon dioxide. It sounds simple, but requires a lot of experience as a wine press operator. In 2008, Lazar and his business partner Jürgen Pfeiffer created the "Pomolo fruit wines" brand. For their first Pomolo Seccos, they refined apple classics such as Boskoop and Gelber Edelapfel. Over time, pear, cherry and blackcurrant Seccos, single-variety apple Seccos and cuvées such as apple-quince Secco were added. Several varieties are non-alcoholic.
Orchard fruit from the region
"Our orchards and orchards are located in Wetterau, Vogelsberg and the Rhine-Main plain - in a region with many hours of sunshine and a mild climate," explains the Hessian secco sponsor and trained landscape gardener. Lazar's business partner Jürgen Pfeiffer mainly looks after three hectares in total.
The orchards are consistently managed according to organic and ecological guidelines: bee colonies from local beekeepers pollinate the blossoms of the fruit trees. The meadows are only mowed once a year and are otherwise kept short by grazing sheep. "Our aim is to be aware of the treasure we have here," emphasizes Wolfgang Lazar. The preservation of orchards is both his mission and his concern.
The harvest is painstaking manual work. The routes from the orchards and orchards to the company's own wine press in Bad Vilbel are short and important so that the delicate, fully ripe fruit can be processed as quickly as possible.
From hobby to recipe for success
Wolfgang Lazar has been pressing cider with his business partner and childhood friend for more than forty years. What began as an ambitious hobby is now a successful company with award-winning products. At the international cider fair Ciderworld and other events, their Seccos have won prizes by the dozen.
The fine Seccos from Hesse are available in selected stores, at the weekly markets in Bad Vilbel and Offenbach and at festivals in Bad Vilbel, Karben and the Wetterau region.
It's just before 2 pm. The market Saturday in Offenbach is coming to an end. The festively dressed group standing around the bar empties their glasses. A birthday boy who has redeemed a voucher for a Secco tasting with his guests. Wolfgang Lazar and his staff also treat themselves to a glass. "We all sit together again for ten minutes to round off the market," Lazar describes his Saturday lunchtime ritual and lifts a bottle of apple-quince Secco from the silver-colored champagne cooler.
