Description
Adolf Schüratzki was born in Dresden on 22 September 1898 as the third child of the Jewish traveler Gustav Schüratzki (born 15.2.1857 in Russia) and his second wife Johanna, née Mannheimer (born 17.9.1871 in Posen). His older siblings Bernhard and Helene were born in Leipzig and Dresden in 1895 and 1897 respectively.
In 1911, the family moved from Darmstadt to Taunusstrasse 30 in Offenbach, where Gustav Schüratzki died in 1914 at the age of 57.
Adolf Schüratzki lived with his mother and sister Helene at Taunusstraße 30 until 1927 and, like his father, was a professional "traveler". On November 26, 1927, he married the Protestant Christian Elisabeth Neun, who was born in Offenbach on July 2, 1904.
The couple first lived at Hohestraße 36, then at Wasserhofstraße 142 and from 1934 to 1943 at Marienstraße 52, which was then called Moltkestraße.
During the Nazi era, Adolf Schüratzki and his wife experienced hostility from the "Aryan" residents of the building; the couple's marriage was considered a "mixed marriage". This protected Adolf Schüratzki from deportation in September 1942, while his mother Johanna Schüratzki was deported via Darmstadt to the Theresienstadt camp on September 27, 1942 and died there on December 31, 1942. Most of the people on the transport were elderly people who had been promised a good life in the Czech town of Theresienstadt.
His sister Helene, his brother Bernhard with his wife Minna and daughter Ruth were among the Offenbach Jews who were deported to Poland via Darmstadt on September 30, 1942.
On April 1, 1943, Adolf Schüratzki became a victim of the order to "eliminate Jewish partners in mixed marriages". After his arrest, he was first imprisoned in Offenbach and then in Darmstadt before being deported to Auschwitz in June 1943, where he was murdered on August 26, 1943, according to the Memorial Book (opens in a new tab).
