Description
Bernhard Schüratzki was born on January 25, 1895. His parents were Gustav, born in 1857, and Johanna Schüratzki, née Mannheimer, born in 1871.
Bernhard Schüratzki initially worked in Hamburg as a sledgehammer. He moved to Offenbach in December 1925, married Minna Cohn in 1931 and lived with her and their daughter Ruth at Mainstrasse 17. His sister Helene lived with their mother Johanna Schüratzki at Taunusstrasse 30, while his brother Adolf Elias lived with his wife at Marienstrasse 52.
In September 1942, the couple were asked to come to the collection point next to the synagogue in Kaiserstrasse with their seven-year-old daughter Ruth. They had already left their apartment at Mainstrasse 17 some time before and had to move to Luisenstrasse 6, a so-called Jews' house. The Schüratzkis were told to take only a small amount of luggage with them and to leave the keys to the apartment and all the cupboards in the house.
A total of 177 Jewish people came from Offenbach to Darmstadt. On September 30, 1942, a transport departed from the Darmstadt freight depot to the Treblinka extermination camp. Helene Schüratzki, her brother Bernhard, his wife Minna and their seven-year-old daughter Ruth were presumably murdered in Treblinka. Their Offenbach registration cards only say "traveling" or "unknown".
