Description
Sofie Hahn, born on September 15, 1869 in Frankfurt, married the Jewish Offenbach leather goods manufacturer Rudolf Friedrich Feldmeier, born on November 27, 1864 in Offenbach, on December 20, 1896.
The couple lived at Bernardstraße 37, where their two daughters, Erna on July 27, 1899 and Lotte on April 19, 1907, were born.
The family belonged to the Jewish community. Erna studied medicine in Munich and Freiburg and then worked as a doctor in Offenbach. Lotte worked as an office clerk in her father's company.
According to the address book, Rudolf Feldmeier was on the "Board of Directors of the Feldmeier & Bock leather goods factory" in 1929. Under the Nazi regime, the Jewish owner was forced into "Aryanization" and had to give up the company and the residential building at Bernardstraße 37. Rudolf Feldmeier died in 1934 and did not live to see the increasing disenfranchisement and persecution by the National Socialists: Erna Feldmeier lost her license as a radiologist after the November pogroms. She made it and emigrated to England in May 1939.
Mother Sofie had to leave Bernardstraße with her daughter Lotte in November 1939 and moved with her to Luisenstraße 86.
According to the registration card, the parents Rudolf and Sofie Feldmeier "moved to an unknown address" on July 1, 1942. In fact, Rudolf Feldmeier had already died on November 30, 1934, as can be seen from the entry in the death register. His death was not noted on the registration card as was usual.
In the deportation list compiled by the Gestapo on September 27, 1942, Sofie Feldmeier was listed as a widow and her place of residence was given as Mittelseestraße 34, where many Jews were housed at the time. It is not known when she moved there from Luisenstraße.
Sofie Feldmeier was deported to Theresienstadt via Darmstadt together with other residents of the house on September 27, 1942. She lived in the concentration camp for another 6 weeks and died there on November 13, 1942 at the age of 73.
According to the registration card, Lotte Feldmeier continued to live at Luisenstraße 86 and went "on a journey" on August 1, 1942. The deportation list from September 30, 1942 lists her as deported from Offenbach via Darmstadt to the Generalgouvernement. The date of her death was set for November 15, 1942.
