Stumbling stone for Ruth-Johanna and Walter-Josef Schwanthaler, Max and Dorothea Schwanthaler, née Stein

Max Schwanthaler was born on April 9, 1892 in Frankfurt-Höchst. On September 6, 1919, he married Dorothea Stein from Offenbach, born on February 5, 1894. The Schwanthaler family had been living at Gerberstraße 4 in Offenbach for rent since September 20, 1919. The house belonged to the Dietz family.

Max Schwanthaler was a businessman by profession. The couple had three children. Their first son Kurt Jakob died on July 22, 1920, just two days after his birth. Their second son, Walter-Josef, was born on January 25, 1923. Five years later, daughter Ruth-Johanna was born on February 15, 1928.

Max and Dorothea Schwanthaler's names, as well as those of their children Walter-Josef and Ruth-Johanna, can be found on the Gestapo's deportation list of September 30, 1942. The family was taken from Offenbach to Darmstadt along with 173 other Jewish people.
The deportation by train from Darmstadt's freight station on September 30, 1942 presumably led to the Treblinka extermination camp. The children were 14 and 19 years old at the time.

According to the entry, Walter-Josef Schwanthaler died in Poland on May 8, 1945; the day on which the war and fascism ended was set as the date of death for many victims of National Socialism.
