City of Offenbach

Stumbling stone for Heinrich, Sigrid, Frieda, née Löwenthal, and Julie Windecker, née Kanthal

Description

The Windecker family lived in their own house at Wilhelmstraße 38 in Offenbach. Josef, born in 1862, and Karoline Windecker, née Stiefel, born in 1859, had eight children, three of whom died in infancy.

The other children were Adolf, born on December 1, 1884, Emmi, born on April 8, 1886, Margarete, born on August 16, 1887, Siegfried, born on October 15, 1894 and Heinrich, born on November 15, 1898.

Josef Windecker worked as a scrap iron dealer and carter, his wife Karoline was employed by him as an authorized signatory and also produced fruit wine in Bürgel. When her husband died in 1922, she initially continued to run the metal and haulage business alone. She died in February 1941 at the age of 82.

The eldest son Adolf had already moved to Hamburg in August 1907. Nothing more is known about his fate or that of his daughters Emmi and Margarete. The second son, Siegfried, was a merchant and married Julie Kanthal in December 1912; she was born on October 18, 1896 in Langenselbold. Siegfried Windecker died at the age of 29 on November 18, 1923, shortly before the birth of his daughter Sigrid on January 15, 1924.

The third son, Heinrich Windecker, married Frieda Löwenthal in October 1929; she was born on June 12, 1904 in Somborn. The couple had no children. Heinrich continued to run his parents' business at Wilhelmstraße 38, which became the target of Nazi attacks in November 1938.

On September 30, 1942, the Nazis deported Heinrich Windecker, his wife Frieda, sister-in-law Julie Windecker and their 18-year-old daughter Sigrid via Darmstadt, presumably to the Treblinka extermination camp.

The registration cards of Heinrich, Frieda and Sigrid Windecker state: 09.10.1942 moved unknown. Julie Windecker's registration card contains the note: 09.10.1942 traveling. All these people were declared dead on 30.07.1949 according to the decision of the Offenbach district court.
