City of Offenbach

14 - Central station

Beschreibung

With the construction of the railroad line from Frankfurt via Bebra to Berlin in the 1870s, Offenbach was given a new station and a station building at the southern end of Kaiserstraße. When the railroad line was raised in 1912-1927 to create intersection-free road connections, a new station building was also planned. However, due to the economic crisis after the First World War, only a gradual reconstruction could be financed. The old neo-Renaissance façade gave way to functional, simplified forms, with massive consoles under the window sills and door lintels remaining as decoration. Reliefs with eagles emphasize the main entrance, the ornamentation of the door frames and the ceramic cladding of the reception room are remarkable examples of German Art Deco.
The entire ensemble also includes the secondary station attached to the east of the reception building, formerly the baggage handling area. After many years of commercial use, the building is intended to replace the main station, which has become too large.
